Yvonne's First Day of Kindergarten!!! WOW, our big girl is getting so grown up. She's been a bit nervous about all this build-up to going to school, but she fared very well once it came to the real thing. We met her teacher, Ms. Gerlach today. She's a very nice lady and is there to support us any time we need help with homeschooling. She teaches both K and Grade 1. We are all signed up for virtual classroom and came home with boxes of materials to get us started for the first term. It felt overwhelming when we got home, but we've got it all organized now and we're ready to start real work tomorrow. Yvonne got a little evaluation today and had no trouble whizzing through counting and drawing skills. She changed a lot after coming home and was very happy and excited, raring to go. She spent some time following directions on how to make modelling clay figures. She made a cup, a plate and a lamp all on her own while we were organizing the supplies.
On other news, we witnessed an RV burn to total destruction last night. About 8:00, we smelt what we thought was someone trying to get a campfire going. Jim looked outside and there was an RV on fire just a short way away from ours. People were running with fire extinguishers, but it was way too late. Luckily, the fire department (volunteers) were on their training night and saw the flames before the fire was even called in. They were here in record time and got the fire under control. By then, it had gutted the entire inside. They spent a few hours taking it apart to determine the cause of the fire. It turns out they had purchased a new MAC computer and had left it plugged in while going for a game of shuffleboard. The power pack caught on fire and the rest is history. They were so lucky to get their wallets salvaged, but nothing else. We put together some clothes and toiletries and got them to the hotel next door. Today, Jim took them into Chilliwack to get a rental car. They've taken it amazingly well, but are just on the beginning of the insurance nightmare!!!
MORAL of the story - don't ever leave a computer plugged in and unattended. It's a shame that in the pursuit of cheap products, we have to be so wary - as far as we're concerned, you should be able to safely leave a computer turned on for an hour or so unattended. We just thank God that they weren't in the RV at the time.
